As of 2019, there are 206 countries across the globe. A country is also called a sovereign state. A country, or sovereign state is defined as a geographical area that is represented by one central government. Common knowledge also defines a country as a sovereign state that has no dependence on any other country or subjected to any other country's power. The number of countries across the globe have constantly changed over history. War, declarations of independence and economical strife are some examples of how the number of recognized countries can grow or shrink.
The number of countries changed dramatically after World War 1 and World War 2. Many of the colonial powers, like the British Empire, France and Spain lost colonies. These colonies declared their independence and became their own country. Some of those colonies had a very easy transition, others through war and some are still fighting civil strife to this day. Either way, in 2019, the 7.8 billion people living on our planet belong to one of the 206 recognized countries.
