Food is any natural substance that is consumed by humans for nutrition and energy. Food can be obtained from one of two sources, either plant or animal. Plant based foods include but not limited to fruits, vegetables and beans. Animal based foods include but not limited to meat and mammary gland milk. Some food sources are manmade, such are artificially sweeteners and preservatives.
Food can have one or more of the five tastes humans can detect. The five different types of tastes human can detect are sweetness, sourness, saltness, bitterness and savoriness. Foods rich in sugars will have a sweet taste. Foods that are high in acidity will taste sour. Foods with high enough amounts of salt (sodium chloride) will taste salty. Foods with bittering agents, like coffee or unsweetened cocoa, will taste bitter. Foods rich in glutamic acid will have a savory taste.
